Salmon Net Cage Farming
Workshop - March 2005
The Salmon Sub-Committee held a public workshop March 16-17. Speakers both for and against the practice of allowing the transfer of Yukon salmon genetic materials for use in the net cage farming industry made presentations to all interested parties who attended. On the last day of the workshop, the Yukon participants were asked to provide reasons the Salmon Sub-Committee should support or reject the continued transfer of Yukon salmon genetic material for use in the net cage farming industry. Attached for your information is a summary of the comments from the Yukoners, as well as the verbatim minutes from March 16-17, and the history of the Salmon Sub-Committee's involvement in the process.

The Salmon Sub-Committee (SSC) is currently conducting consultations to determine whether or not the Yukon public supports the practice of permitting Yukon salmon genetic materials to be collected for use in salmon net cage farming.
At present, Yukon salmon eggs and milt (sperm) can be collected in the Yukon and transported out of the Territory for use in salmon net cage farms.
The Salmon Sub-Committee would like to gauge public support or opposition for the continuation of this practice.
The SSC hired an independent contractor to conduct a literature review on the benefits and impacts of salmon net cage farming, a copy of the Executive Summary can be found below as well as the full report Benefits and impacts of Net-cage Salmon farming: An Internet Literature Review. Based on public response the SSC may also, in future, conduct a workshop to discuss salmon net cage farming in more detail.
