Salmon Sub-Committee's Annual Youth Contest 2009
Contest Guidelines for Teachers/Parents & Participants
The Salmon Sub-Committee is depending on you to show an interest in learning about our salmon resource.
Theme:
The Salmon Sub-Committee would like you to put your knowledge hats on
and craftÉ show & tell us what you know about salmon! You could paint a
salmon; describe how salmon taste, show on a map where salmon migrate or
share anything else you might know about salmon in a fun and artistic
way!
To Win:
PUT YOUR CREATIVE THINKING CAP ON AND ARTISTICALLY CRAFT WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT SALMON
All creative entries will be accepted. Some ideas include, but are not limited to:
- Make a Mural
- Create a Mobile
- Build a Stick Model
- Draw a Picture that tells a story about a salmonsÕ lifecycle
- Sketch a Cartoon
- Sculpt a Clay Model
- Create a Collage
- Design a Poster
- Paint a Picture
- Flag a map of migration patterns
- Label a salmon and name anatomy
Who Can Participate?
Individual Entries: As an individual the contest is open to all Yukon residents pre-school through to and including grade seven.
Class Entries: The contest is open to all Yukon students in pre-school through to and including grade seven to participate and submit one project as a group.
Artwork will be grouped and judged as follows:
Individual Category 1: Pre-school/Grade 1
Individual Category 2: Grade 2/Grade 3/Grade 4
Individual Category 3:Grade 5/Grade 6/Grade 7
Classroom Category: All
1st/ 2nd/ 3rd prizes will be awarded in each of the individual categories. A trophy will also be engraved and awarded to the winning class to keep for the year in recognition of their team's success.
Please Include:
For Individual Entries: Include artist's name, grade and telephone number. As well, the craft may or may not have a title, but each entry must include a brief written interpretation and how artwork relates to the theme. All participants will receive a t-shirt; if possible, please indicate the size of shirt required. In each of child/youth/adult sizes small/medium/large is available.
For Class Entries: Include name of school, each participant's name and teacher's contact information including telephone number, which must be clearly written and submitted with artwork. As well, the project may or may not have a title, but each entry must include a brief written interpretation and how artwork relates to the theme. Prizes:
All participants will receive a free t-shirt. Lots of fabulous prizes including fishing rods and reels, books about salmon, clothing, pizza and gift certificates.
Extras:
- All artwork will be on display at the Yukon Arts Centre in March 2009
- Selected artwork may be featured in the Fisheries & Oceans
Canada 2009 "Salmon Harvest Calendar"
- Winning entries may be scanned and/or photographed and posted on
the SSC website
- Artists names and/or photographs may be published in local
newspapers, newsletters, magazines or posted on the SSC website
